La chica del lago: A Magical Realism Masterpiece
As I sat in the dark, watching “La chica del lago” unfold before me, I was amazed at how closely it resembled one of my own stories. Yet, it was at the same time so different, so magical and so unpredictable. The movie is based on the book “Out of Focus” by Carlo Lucarelli, but director Andrea Molaioli and screenwriter Sandro Veronesi have given it a Gabriel Garcia Marquez touch.
Set in a small Italian town surrounded by mountains and a beautiful lake, “La chica del lago” is a story about secrets, lies, love and murder. The film starts with the body of a beautiful young girl being found floating in the lake. Enter Inspector Giovanni Sanzio (Fabio Troiano), who has been sent from Rome to investigate the suspicious death.
The townsfolk are tight-lipped and cryptic about what they know or saw. As one character puts it: “We’re not here to tell you things, Inspector. We’re here to live our lives.” However, as Sanzio persists with his investigation, secrets start to unravel.
One of my favorite scenes in the film is when Sanzio interviews Claudia (Valeria Golino), an eccentric woman who claims she can communicate with the dead. The dialogue between them is witty and sharp, reminiscent of Garcia Marquez’s characters.
The standout performance in “La chica del lago” comes from Toni Servillo as Augusto Flores, a once-successful author who has been suffering from writer’s block for years. Servillo brings depth and nuance to his portrayal of Augusto – conveying both his arrogance and his vulnerability.
The cinematography in this film is simply breathtaking – capturing both the beauty and mystery of the Italian landscape. The score by Teho Teardo creates an eerie yet enchanting atmosphere that draws the audience in.
“La chica del lago” was a commercial and critical success upon its release in 2007, earning several awards including the David di Donatello for Best Film. It’s not hard to see why. The film is a perfect example of magical realism – seamlessly blending the fantastical with the real.
It’s worth noting that “La chica del lago” was filmed in just five weeks, which is a testament to the skill and talent of the cast and crew. Director Andrea Molaioli has said that he wanted to capture the spontaneity and energy that comes with shooting on location.
While “La chica del lago” has been praised by many, there have also been some criticisms – particularly around the portrayal of women in the film. Some have argued that they are either overly sexualized or reduced to stereotypes.
However, I believe that “La chica del lago” is a masterful work of art that captures the essence of magical realism. It’s a story about secrets and lies, love and loss, hope and despair. It’s a story about humanity – flawed yet beautiful.
As Augusto Flores says at one point: “We all live our lives with secrets.” And it’s those secrets that make “La chica del lago” such an engaging and captivating film.
