Have you ever watched a movie that felt both hilarious and sobering at the same time? A movie that made you laugh out loud and also think deeply about the absurdity of our political culture? A movie that challenged your assumptions about partisan polarization, media manipulation, and democratic ideals without preaching or bashing anyone in particular? If not, I highly recommend you check out Irresistible, a recent film written and directed by Jon Stewart.
Yes, that Jon Stewart, the former host of The Daily Show, who has been known for his sharp wit, biting commentary, and liberal leanings. But don’t let his reputation fool you into thinking this movie is a one-sided attack on conservatives or a love letter to progressives. In fact, it’s more nuanced than that, and more entertaining than most political dramas or comedies out there. It’s not perfect, of course – what movie is? – but it’s definitely worth watching for its clever plot twists, witty dialogue, solid acting by an ensemble cast, and relevant themes.
The basic storyline revolves around Gary Zimmer (Steve Carell), a Democratic strategist who is still reeling from the 2016 election loss of Hillary Clinton to Donald Trump. He sees a glimmer of hope in a viral video of Jack Hastings (Chris Cooper), a retired Marine colonel who speaks out for the rights of undocumented immigrants in rural Wisconsin. Gary convinces his boss (Mackenzie Davis) to send him to the small town to recruit Jack as a Democratic candidate for mayor against the Republican incumbent (Brent Sexton). Once there, Gary meets several colorful characters who challenge his assumptions about the heartland and his own motives.
One such character is Faith Brewster (Rose Byrne), Gary’s nemesis from Fox News who shows up to cover the election as well. Faith is a cynical and conniving journalist who exploits the town’s divisions for the sake of ratings and ridicule. She clashes with Gary in several hilarious scenes that highlight the absurdity of cable news and partisan spin. Their banter is a delight to watch, as both actors deliver their lines with perfect timing and chemistry.
Another character who steals the show is Jack’s daughter (Mackenzie Davis), a young woman who is both savvy and sincere, and who challenges Gary’s assumptions about gender and generational gaps.
