Review
As I sat down to watch the latest movie in the ‘Home Alone’ series, ‘Home Alone 3’, I must admit that I had my reservations. After all, it was a well-known fact that the original film, starring Macaulay Culkin as Kevin McCallister, was a classic of its time. However, just as with any Austen heroine would approach a new situation with an open mind and a hopeful heart, I decided to give this new installment a chance.
The plot unfolds in an entirely different family and setting from the first two films. The McCallister family is nowhere in sight — instead, we meet Alex Pruitt (played by Alex D. Linz), a young boy who is home sick with chickenpox, trying to entertain himself while his mother is at work. When Alex discovers that his house has been targeted by four international thieves who are after a top-secret computer chip hidden inside a toy car delivered to his house by mistake, he decides to take matters into his own hands.
I found it refreshing that the film didn’t rely on rehashing old formulas and characters. Instead, it introduced us to new characters who were just as compelling and entertaining. One of my favorite scenes was when Alex used remote-controlled cars and other household objects to booby-trap his home — much like Kevin did in the first two movies.
Despite being directed by someone other than Chris Columbus (who directed the first two films), Raja Gosnell managed to capture much of the same spirit that made the original films so great. There were plenty of laughs to be had throughout — from Alex’s clever pranks on the criminals to their comically botched attempts at capturing him.
The cast was excellent too; Alex D. Linz was perfectly cast as Alex Pruitt and demonstrated great comedic timing despite being such a young actor at the time of filming. Other standout performances came from Olek Krupa, Rya Kihlstedt, and Kevin Kilner who played the bumbling burglars.
It’s not hard to see why ‘Home Alone 3’ was so successful upon its release. Not only did it introduce a new generation of viewers to the beloved franchise, but it also provided plenty of laughs and memorable moments for fans of the original films. The soundtrack was also excellent, featuring songs from artists like TLC and U2.
Overall, while ‘Home Alone 3’ may not have been quite as iconic as the first two films in the series, it still had plenty to offer. It was an entertaining and amusing film that captured much of the same spirit that made its predecessors such classics. As I sat down to watch it, hesitant but hopeful, I found myself pleasantly surprised by what I saw.
