It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a zombie movie in possession of good humor must be worth watching. And so it is with the great pleasure that I report on the delightful and quirky zombie film, “Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead”.
The film begins where its predecessor, “Dead Snow”, left off; with Martin, our hero, being chased by a horde of Nazi zombies. After losing his arm, he wakes up in the hospital to find out that the doctors have accidentally attached an undead arm to his body. In between attempting to remove it and convincing the police of his innocence in the events of the previous night, he discovers that Herzog, the leader of the Nazi zombies, has not given up on his mission to take over Norway. And so begins an epic battle, Red vs. Dead.
Martin, played by Vegar Hoel once again, is an endearing and relatable protagonist who you can’t help but root for. He’s just an ordinary guy caught up in an extraordinary situation and trying to do his best to save his town from being overrun by undead Nazis.
Alongside Martin are a ragtag group of misfits, including a trio of American zombie hunters who provide some much-needed comedic relief in between all the gore and violence.
One notable addition to the cast is Martin Starr as Daniel, a homosexual friend who helps Martin along the way. Starr brings a certain warmth and lightness to his role that perfectly balances out some of the darker themes in the film.
And let us not forget about Herzog (Orjan Gamst), our undead villain who is hell-bent on completing his mission at any cost; even if it means sacrificing more members of his army along the way.
The plot may seem absurd at first glance but director Tommy Wirkola manages to weave humor into every scene without detracting from the horror elements or losing any credibility.
The film’s score, composed by Christian Wibe, is exceptional and adds to the overall enjoyment of the film. It’s a well-crafted soundtrack that complements every scene perfectly.
The cinematography is also brilliant, with a gorgeous palette of colors despite the grisly subject matter. The special effects are top-notch and never feel overdone or out of place.
Overall, “Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead” is a highly entertaining and engaging film that should be on everyone’s must-watch list. It’s a masterful blend of gore, humor, and heart that will keep you hooked until the very end.
While some may criticize its gratuitous violence and absurd storyline, it should be remembered that this film is first and foremost a horror-comedy; it’s meant to be taken with a grain of salt and enjoyed for what it is.
In conclusion, I must say that “Dead Snow 2: Red vs. Dead” is definitely worth a watch for those who enjoy a good zombie flick with some humor thrown in for good measure. It’s not Jane Austen by any means but it certainly has its own charm. So grab some popcorn and settle in for an unforgettable ride into the world of Nazi zombies and their undead foes!
